1. Hamster pellets
Although hamsters can eat a wide variety of foods, hamster pellets are still recommended as the main diet, with other foods served as supplementary feeds in moderation.
2. Grains
Hamsters can eat grains such as rice, corn, wheat, mung beans, buckwheat and sorghum. As rodents, they love whole grains. They also enjoy seeds including sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, flaxseeds and peas. Do not overfeed these items as they may cause bloating. Portions must be controlled. Besides, each hamster has different food preferences, so you may select foods based on your pet’s taste.
3. Nuts
Hamsters are fond of nuts like peanuts, sunflower seeds, walnuts and cashews. They should only be offered as occasional treats for flavour variety, not in large quantities.
4. Plants
Hamsters can eat natural plants such as grass, alfalfa and reeds. These provide plenty of plant fibre, enrich their diet and help wear down their teeth.
5. Meat
Hamsters can eat meat including chicken breast, shrimp and fish. The meat must be boiled in water, cooled and cut into small pieces before feeding. Never feed raw meat, which may lead to bacterial infection and indigestion.
6. Insects
Hamsters can eat insects such as mealworms, superworms, silkworm pupae, crickets, dragonflies, flying insects and captive‑bred cockroaches. Insects are rich in protein and great for nutritional supplementation. Hamsters love them. Insects with hard shells need to be cut open with scissors prior to feeding.
