First time he fell asleep in my hand. Six weeks of sitting next to the cage with my hand inside doing nothing at all. Tonight he walked on, groomed himself and went to sleep. I did not move for twenty minutes.

Congratulations. This is the best milestone in the whole hobby.

The fact you did nothing for six weeks is the lesson. Everyone wants to rush it.

The not moving for twenty minutes part. I know that feeling exactly.

What do baby hamsters eat?

1. Hamster pellets
Although hamsters can eat a wide variety of foods, hamster pellets are still recommended as the main diet, with other foods served as supplementary feeds in moderation.
2. Grains
Hamsters can eat grains...

Portion control on the nuts is the hard part. They beg so well.

The plant section is useful. Mine gets a bit of alfalfa now and seems to like it.

The grains list is handy. Mine goes mad for a bit of cooked rice.

How many times should hamsters be fed per day?

Feeding plans should be adjusted according to the hamster's age:

- **Baby hamsters (0–2 months old):** Feed small portions frequently after weaning, 4 to 5 times a day. Offer a small amount of staple...

The age brackets are a good way to think about it rather than one rule for all hamsters.

Hoarding spoiled food is the one I learned the hard way. Smaller portions and it stopped.

Feeding mostly at night made an obvious difference for mine within a week.

Midnight wheel marathon. Is yours this loud too? Mine starts at exactly 23:40 every night like he has a schedule. I started leaving the room light on low and the noise seems calmer, or maybe I just sleep better now.

The low light thing is interesting, I had not thought about it making a difference.

Mine starts about eleven and stops for a nap around one. No idea why.

A silent wheel was the only real fix for me. Worth the money in the end.

2026 Hamster Wheel Buying Guide: Why Silent, Pinch-Proof Clear Acrylic Wheels Are Essential

Insufficient exercise causes hamster obesity, bar chewing and stress. A good wheel is enrichment gear, not just a toy. 2026 keepers prioritize **silence, pinch safety and easy cleaning**. Solid thermoformed acrylic wheels are trending.

## Why these 3 features mat...

The night test for resonance is something I have never seen written down. Useful.

Silence is worth paying extra for. A squeaky wheel at 2am ruins the whole hobby.

The dwarf sizing being smaller is the opposite of what everyone assumes. Good that you said it.

Our daily routine, written out (it matters more than I expected)

The photo is the food bowl, about ten minutes into the evening.

I did not believe routine mattered until I had a hamster who went from hiding all day to sitting at the front of the cage at 8pm waiting. It took about two weeks of doing the same things at the same time. Here is wh...

This is a really clean routine. Saving it for when I next get asked.

The 8pm sitting at the front of the cage is exactly what happened with mine. Took about a fortnight.

Weighing weekly is the best habit in this whole list.

Taming took me three weeks of doing almost nothing

I want to write this down because when I searched for advice at the start I mostly found either "just pick them up" or nothing useful at all.

Week one: nothing. I did not touch him. I sat next to the cage at the same time every evening, talked in a low voice, and put a treat in...

The goal being that they come to you rather than tolerate you is the whole thing. Well put.

A week of doing nothing sounds slow until you realise it saves you a month later.

Handling over the bed instead of standing up is such a simple fix and I had never thought about it.

Bedding: the one upgrade that changed everything for us

Sharing this because it took me two hamsters and a lot of reading to get it right.

When I started out I used maybe 4-5cm of bedding because that is what the pet shop cage came with and it looked "clean". My Syrian slept on top of it, in the open, and woke up at every little nois...

The heavy hide on the deep corner is a small thing that makes a huge difference.
syrian_dad

What bedding do you use at that depth? Dust is my problem once it gets deeper.
peanut_butler
Chloe B.
The bit about not fully cleaning is the one I wish I had read a year ago. I was doing a full change weekly and wondering why he was miserable.

Switching from seed mix to pellets — how slow?

My dwarf refuses pellets completely. I have tried mixing them in at about 10% and he just picks around them.

How long did it take yours to accept a new food? Any tricks?

Mine was the same at 10%. It was 30% mixed with his old food that finally got him eating them.
emma_hamham
Emma W.
Try soaking two pellets in water for a minute first, the smell changes completely and mine suddenly ate them.
luna_the_hammy
Sofia M.
Mine took about three weeks. What worked was cutting the pellets in half and scattering them in the bedding instead of the bowl.

How much bedding is actually enough?

I keep reading that 15cm is the minimum, but my Syrian just builds one giant nest in the corner and ignores the rest.

Should I still fill the whole base or is a deep corner enough? He seems happy either way but I want to do this right.

Filling the whole base sounds nice in photos but it is a lot of bedding. One deep end has worked fine here.

Second the corner approach. I put a heavy hide on top of the deep part so it does not cave in when he digs.

The bedding-in-the-bowl problem is universal. I raised mine on a little platform and it mostly stopped.
