Bedding: the one upgrade that changed everything for us

Sharing this because it took me two hamsters and a lot of reading to get it right.

When I started out I used maybe 4-5cm of bedding because that is what the pet shop cage came with and it looked "clean". My Syrian slept on top of it, in the open, and woke up at every little noise. I honestly thought that was just how hamsters were.

What finally clicked for me: bedding is not decoration, it is the burrow. A hamster that cannot dig a real tunnel never gets to do the single most important thing its body is built for. Once I filled the base to 18-20cm (I pushed it up to 25cm in one corner) the change was obvious within a week. He stopped sleeping in the open, he started coming out at a predictable time in the evening, and he got noticeably less jumpy about hands.

Practical things I learned the hard way:

- Measure the depth with your hand, not by eye. A base that looks deep in a photo is usually only 8cm in real life.
- Paper-based bedding holds a tunnel far better than wood shavings. Shavings collapse and are also not great for their breathing.
- Unscented and dust-free matters more than brand. If it makes you cough when you open the bag, it is not going in the cage.
- Put a heavy hide on top of the deep corner. It gives the tunnel a roof and stops the whole thing caving in when they dig.
- Do not fully clean the bedding every week. Spot-clean the pee corner and you can keep most of the burrow for a month or more. Full cleanings were what made mine stressed, not dirty bedding.

The other thing nobody told me: a deep base needs a bigger cage, or the bedding eats all the floor space. I went to a 100x50cm base and it was the right call.

If you are still on shallow bedding, this is the one change I would make first. Everything else - wheel, food, taming - got easier after it.
